Statement from Stay UMC

Whereas: Representatives of the Liberia Annual Conference, the United Methodist Church, we wish to welcome you, and to address the recent discussions surrounding disaffiliation of the United Methodist Church, and the potential alignment with Global Methodist Church and other affiliates.

Whereas:We are members of the UMC/LAC both clergy and laity have formed ourselves under the unity of the United Methodist Church, called Stay UMC, aims at staying, protecting, and defending the  United Methodist Church against all kinds of false teachings and statements that are undermining the truthful doctrine and teachings of the United Methodist.

Whereas: We are also aware that there are members and leaders who are still claiming to be UMs but are supporting and spreading lies about our great UMC for wish this statement is issued. Subsequently, we endorse and stand by the Holy Scripture, UMC Book of Discipline definition of marriage and the Liberia Annual Conference resolutions and the College of Bishops of Africa have defined Marriage as a Union between a man and a woman. We are, therefore asking all member of the United Methodist Church, and delegates to the 191st Annual Conference to denounce and resist any discussion on a report that has to do with the LAC/UMC disaffiliation from the UMC.

Whereas: We believe that the unity and integrity of the United Methodist Church are of utmost importance, and we encourage all members of the church to uphold their commitment at baptism and membership vows when they became a United Methodist.

Whereas: We strongly urge all members of the Liberia Annual Conference who are supporting the calls for disaffiliation and potential alignment with the Global Methodist Church while still claiming to be UMs to desist immediate and exercise their rights to leave the UMC immediately.  All UMC members must remain calm and strong to resist such call to leave the UMC.

Whereas: We wish to address those leaders who are serving in key positions of the United Methodist Church in Liberia and, at the same time, are undermining the unity and mission of our denomination to resign immediately and be investigated for spreading lies about the United Methodist Church, and face disciplinary action.

Whereas: Finally, we remain committed to the mission and values of the United Methodist Church and believe that through open and respectful dialogue, we urge all members and leaders to approach these discussions at the conference with wisdom, humility, and a spirit of unity, and we remain hopeful that we can find a way forward that preserves the unity and integrity of the Liberia Annual Conference, the United Methodist Church.
